If you wake up wanting something sweet, overnight oats are one of the easiest ways to have it and still start the day well. You mix a jar in the evening, the oats soften in the fridge, and breakfast is ready when you are. This is part of our Healthy Cooking guide, where flavour always comes first.
Below is the base we use, plus five combinations that taste like a treat: carrot cake, coconut mango and lime, peanut butter and chocolate, salted caramel and nuts, and banana with blueberries.
The Overnight Oats Base
Every jar starts the same way. Once you have this ratio down, the flavours are just add-ins.
For one jar: 50 g rolled oats, 125 ml milk (dairy, almond, oat or coconut), 1 tbsp chia seeds and 2 to 3 tbsp yogurt or quark. Stir well, cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight.
The chia seeds and yogurt make the texture thick and creamy, and the yogurt or quark adds protein, which helps the jar feel more filling. If it’s too thick in the morning, loosen it with a splash of milk.

5 Overnight Oats Ideas
Add these to the base above. Amounts are for one jar, so adjust the sweetness to taste.
1. Carrot cake
Stir in 1 small finely grated carrot (about 50 g), ½ tsp cinnamon, a pinch of nutmeg and 1 tsp honey or maple syrup. Top with 10 g chopped walnuts and 1 tbsp raisins or coconut flakes.
Our full Car-Oat-Cake recipe adds a cinnamon quark layer on top for that frosting feel.
2. Coconut, mango & lime
Use coconut milk or add 2 tbsp coconut yogurt, then fold in 60 to 80 g diced mango and the zest of half a lime with a squeeze of juice. Keep the chia in, it gives the jar a soft, pudding-like texture.
For an oat-free version, our Chia Colada is a chia pudding with coconut milk, pineapple and lime.
3. Peanut butter & chocolate
Mix in 1 tbsp (about 15 g) peanut butter and 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder, with a little honey or maple syrup if you like it sweeter. A few pieces of dark chocolate on top make it feel like a proper treat.
4. Salted caramel & nuts
Make the base with almond milk and add 1 to 2 tsp maple syrup, ¼ tsp vanilla extract and a small pinch of sea salt. Scatter 15 g chopped peanuts or mixed nuts on top just before eating so they stay crunchy.
For the full chocolate-bar effect, add a few dark chocolate bits.
5. Banana & blueberry
Mash half a ripe banana into the base with a pinch of cinnamon, then top with a handful of blueberries (about 50 g). The banana adds natural sweetness, so you may not need any extra.
Build your own
Pick one fruit, one spice and one crunchy topping. Think apple with cinnamon and almonds, or berries with vanilla and toasted seeds. Add nuts and seeds in the morning to keep their crunch.
Why Overnight Oats Work for Breakfast
Overnight oats aren’t magic, but they are practical. Oats and chia bring fibre, the yogurt or quark brings protein, and the fruit and spice bring the sweetness, so it’s easy to skip the pastry without feeling like you’ve missed out.
And because the jar is made the night before, breakfast takes no effort at all. That’s usually what makes a healthy habit stick.
Make ahead
Mix in the evening and grab it from the fridge in the morning.
Sweet without the sugar rush
Fruit, cinnamon and vanilla do most of the work, so you can keep added sweetener small.
Easy to vary
One base, endless combinations. Change the fruit and spice with the seasons.
Tips for Better Overnight Oats
- Use rolled oats. They soften into a creamy texture overnight. Quick oats go softer and steel-cut oats stay firm.
- Stir twice. Mix, wait five minutes, then stir again so the chia doesn’t clump.
- Add crunch last. Nuts, seeds and granola go on just before eating.
- Sweeten to taste. Ripe fruit often means you need little or no honey or syrup.
- Make two at once. Jars keep well in the fridge for up to 2 days.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do overnight oats keep in the fridge?
Covered in the fridge, they keep well for up to 2 days. Add fresh fruit that goes soft quickly, and crunchy toppings, on the day you eat them.
Can I eat overnight oats warm?
Yes. Warm the jar contents gently in a pan or the microwave with a splash of milk. The texture becomes more like porridge.
Which oats are best?
Rolled oats give the best texture. Quick oats work but go softer, and steel-cut oats don’t soften enough overnight.
Can I make them dairy-free?
Yes. Use almond, oat or coconut milk and a plant-based yogurt instead of dairy yogurt or quark.
